'OK, will it change the scene?'
NAGPUR: On Monday Ashok Chavan was the 'chief minister of Maharashtra'. On Tuesday, he is now the 'former chief minister of Maharashtra'. Chairman of CWG organizing committee Suresh Kalmadi too was sacked from key position in Congress party. Both men were tainted by multi-crore scams. TOI asked a few citizens what they thought of their departure.
CA student Sanket Hasabnis said new scams seem to crop up magically to divert the public attention from older ones.

"I think that these scams are all methodically planned. First there was IPL scam, then the CWG scam and now this," he said. "It's all so mind boggling. Ashok Chavan is just a small piece of a big cake. Just because he's the chief minister, they are paying a lot of attention to him. There were so many others involved in the scam. There were ministers from BJP and Shiv Sena but everyone is concentrating only on Chavan," he added.
Unlike Sanket, chief medical officer of WCL (Kanhan) Dr. Anantkumar Chaukse is full of optimism. "I see this as a silver lining in the dark cloud. I have hope that something good will come out of this," he said. "I feel Chavan did the right thing by resigning. No doubt he did this to save his own image, but at least he resigned on his own. I give credit to the media and whoever acted as the 'whistleblower' for bringing this scam out in the open. Even the CWG scam was a huge blot on county's image. The public is now aware what the modern day politicians are capable of. It will take a long time for us to fight corruption but I think it's a start," he said.
Senior teacher and director of Modern School SM Joshi was quite upset about the whole scenario, "There is corruption everywhere right from the top," he said. "If top administrators are not ashamed of indulging in such activities, then why should the lower administrators be any different? When we accuse them of being corrupt, they point to their bosses and tell us to look at what they are doing. Chavan stepped down and someone else will take his place. And he'll be equally corrupt. Personally, I think that as a nation we no longer adhere to the principles of honesty and integrity. Serious action needs to be taken against these people by the public itself. The new generation should take this up as a mission to expose such shameful acts and prevent them from happening in the future," he added.
Some feel that all this is a political game. Japneet Singh Chawla sees it as a cat and mouse game. "It is quite evident that the politicians are at each other's throats," he said. "These politicians will do anything to gain power. This scam looked like the best way to bring down the chief minister and it was somewhat blown out of proportion. I don't want to imply that he should not have resigned, but for me the whole thing looks like a setup," he said.
